Ridgefield 9/11 Memorial - photo by Jennie Carr

A decade has passed and thanks to three dedicated Ridgefielders, our town now has a beautiful monument created out of a steel beam from The World Trade to memorialize the lives lost on 9/11. Thank you to Allison Greeley, a 9/11 survivor, Steve Zemo, and monument creator, Chris Curnan for all that you did to make this memorial possible.

Hundreds of people, young and old, joined together on the lawn in front of Ridgefield Rec Center for last night's 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Monument Unveiling. It began with Molly Weeks on alto saxophone playing "God Bless the USA" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic".

"This steel beam from The World Trade Center was brought here by the people of Ridgefield and stands to honor the memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on The United States. It is dedicated to those who fell and those who carry on. May we never forget".

artist Christopher Curnan and owner of Ridgefield Supply in front of American flag art

Ridgefield artist Christopher Curnan made a fellow business owner and longtime Ridgefield resident very happy yesterday. "It was a total surprise and took my breath away," Margaret Price, the owner of Ridgefield Supply says of the grand American Flag that Chris so artfully and thoughtfully created for her.

The 4 plus acre lumberyard on Prospect Street in Ridgefield is currently undergoing an expansion. Curnan took some of the materials that were being discarded to create memories that will now last a lifetime. "The wood is from the train station that we dismantled. We are not reusing the siding, but we saved it," explains Price.

Chris Curnan affectionately calls the beautiful American Flag "Lou's Pride" in memory of Margaret Price's dad, Louis who passed away at the age of 66 last year. "It will hang in our new warehouse! Lou would be proud," proclaims Price. Price says of the duo, "They were very close".

For the past two years, the gigantic American Flag, once anchored to two Siberian Elm trees from Memorial Day through July 4th, has not been in its rightful place in front of Town Hall. That’s because the two beautiful trees (whose life spanned 100 years) were removed in 2018 (because they posed a safety hazard) and an alternative solution to adhering Old Glory to the front of our Town landmark building has not been found.

That may be about to change thanks to Ridgefield artist Chris Curnan.

First Selectman Rudy Marconi told us today that Curnan's plan is currently under review by the Town's structural engineers. "Chris Curnan came up with the idea to attach channel iron to the roof," said Marconi.
